Insulate Attic Floors Correctly

Adding insulation to your attic is one of the most cost-effective and energy-efficient home improvement projects that can be done by a moderately skilled do-it-yourselfer. It slows heat buildup in summer and winter, making your home more comfortable while saving you money on your utility bills. It also helps prevent dangerous ice dams on roofs in winter.

AFT Insulation you start working in the attic, take stock of what you already have. Ensure that any existing material meets minimum R-value requirements for the climate in your area, and note how much additional loose-fill fiberglass or other type of insulation is needed to bring it up to the required value. Also determine the condition of existing insulation, as material that’s moldy or water-stained won’t be effective. If you’re concerned about asbestos, consider bringing in a pro to test for it before removing any material.

Then, gear up with personal protective equipment—long sleeves, pants, a hat, eye protection and a dust mask. Make sure that the attic access hatch is properly closed, and remove any plywood boards covering the attic floor. Once you’re in the attic, prepare to blow loose-fill insulation with a rented blown-in insulation machine (or simply spread it manually using a rake). Start in the far corner of the attic closest to the access hatch and work your way around. When you reach the area near the access hatch, block off that part of the attic to prevent any blown-in insulation from escaping into your living space.
